Backbone

There are many terms which are used colloquially on the net which have somewhat amorphous definitions; one of the most prominent of these is "backbone" (and the related "tier 1").

"Backbone" is generally understood by most people to mean the tier 1 carriers, and the tier 2 networks which connect directly to them, either by peering or buying transit.
